BMI calculator
Work out your body mass index and the healthy weight range for your height, in kg or lb. Then see how many calories it takes to get there with the calorie calculator.
BMI is a quick screen for adults, not a diagnosis: it cannot tell muscle from fat, and it is read differently for children, during pregnancy and for athletes.
Common questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is counted as a healthy weight. Under 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obese.
Why are there South Asian cut-offs?
People of South Asian background tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, and face higher risks of diabetes and heart disease at lower weights. Guidelines used in India count 23 and above as overweight and 25 and above as obese.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For example, 65 kg at 1.65 m is 65 / (1.65 x 1.65) = 23.9.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a useful first check, but it does not measure body fat directly. A muscular person can have a high BMI and little fat. Waist size is a good second check: for most adults, aim to keep your waist under half your height.
